Running shoes typically need to be replaced after 300-500 miles of use. Wearing old and broken down tennis shoes can cause your feet and knees to ache after you run.


Want to know if your shoes are worn out? Try the “twist test.” Grab the heel and the toe of the shoe and twist in opposite directions. You can also try folding the shoe — it should bend at the toe but stay rigid along the midsole and the heel. If the shoes twist or fold easily, that’s a sign that you might need to purchase new running shoes.

The “No Days Off” Mindset

While it is great to be motivated and want to accomplish your running goals, it can be dangerous to not have rest days. If you don’t give your body a break, your muscles can drag and weaken on your next run because of physical exhaustion. Make sure you have rest days to allow yourself to recover so you can achieve your long term goals.

Staying hydrated is one of the most important things when running. Running causes the body to lose fluids and other critical nutrients, and failing to replenish those before your next run can prevent you from performing to the best of your ability. Dehydration can also lead to problems beyond running. Make sure you drink plenty of water before, during, and after your run.

Skipping the Cooldown

It’s easy to say you don't need to cool down after a run, but you shouldn’t skip this important workout step. The purpose of the cooldown is to bring your heart rate down — when you skip it, your body doesn't know how to begin with the recovery phase and your muscles tense up causing soreness. If you find yourself sore after running, you might need to lengthen your cooldown to give yourself more time to readjust.
